Mentorship Program home

SLA Conference Interpreters at the World BankSince its inception in 1983, with exactly one participant, Jaime Coronado and one mentor, Jan Nishimura, SLA’s Mentorship Program has grown into a vital part of SLA’s proactive commitment to developing and maintaining the highest standards in the interpreting profession.

SLA’s nationally known Mentorship Program is designed to:

  • Expose interpreters to a vast array of assignments
  • Improve skills in a supported and supportive environment
  • Provide regular feedback in a constructive manner
SLA's Mentorship Program includes:
  • Paid interpreting experience with a variety of appropriate teamed and solo assignments.
  • Regular meetings with mentors.
  • Feedback on videotaped samples of each participant's interpreting.
  • In-service opportunities.
  • Small and large group discussion with other program participants, mentors and staff interpreters
SLA’s Mentorship Program is for interpreters who possess at least entry level or better interpreting skills.  Participants are expected to possess the skill to interpret both solo and teamed assignments. The Program can serve as a bridge between an ITP and the professional world of interpreting. Other more experienced interpreters have used SLA’s Mentorship Program as a concentrated time to focus on a specialty or to prep for the national certification process.

To apply for SLA’s Mentorship Program complete an application and return it to SLA with a videotaped interpreting sample. For more information see our Mentorship FAQ’s or contact the Program Director, Gordon Vernon 301-962-3064. We look forward to working with you!
